Gifts and decorations galore
Having nearly finished adding our Christmas decorations and stock to the website, still a few waiting delivery, I started to ponder about how these things came about and that got me thinking…….
Well that is a rabbit hole I plunged into and the hours I could have wasted! However I did find these two little nuggets.
- German pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern built a wreath out of an old cartwheel to help the children in his mission school count the days until Christmas. He added small candles to be lit everyday and The Advent Candle was born.
- In the 1840’s baker and confectioner Tom Smith invented the Christmas cracker after he discovered the French bon bon, a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of tissue paper and had a brilliant idea.
Don’t forget that Sunday 20th November is Stir Up Sunday, best make our Christmas pudding and will have to remember to buy the mulling spices for mulled wine while I make, oh and by the way this is our first Sunday opening for the Christmas period.
